About Catocala crataegi Saunders, 1876
Catocala crataegi, commonly known as the hawthorn underwing or chokeberry underwing, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. Its distribution ranges from Ontario, Quebec and Prince Edward Island in Canada, south through Maine and Connecticut to Georgia in the United States, west to Arkansas, and north again to Minnesota. For a period of time, Catocala pretiosa was treated as a synonym of Catocala crataegi, but Schweitzer revised this classification in 1982 and reinstated C. pretiosa as a valid separate species. This moth has a wingspan of 40 to 50 millimeters. Adult moths are active on the wing from June to August, with the timing varying based on their location. The species is thought to produce one generation per year. The larvae of Catocala crataegi feed on plants from the genus Crataegus, as well as Pyrus malus.
