About Catocala andromedae Guenée, 1852
Catocala andromedae, commonly known as the Andromeda underwing or gloomy underwing, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species was first formally described by Achille Guenée in 1852. In the United States, it ranges from Maine in the north, south through New Jersey to Florida and Alabama, and west as far as Texas and Oklahoma. The wingspan of adult individuals measures between 40 and 50 mm. Adult moths are active on the wing from May to August, with the exact timing varying based on location. It is thought that this species produces one generation per year. The caterpillars of Catocala andromedae feed on plants from the genera Andromeda, Carya, Lyonia, and Quercus, as well as the species Vaccinium angustifolium and Vaccinium corymbosum.
