Castilleja ambigua Hook. & Arn. is a highly variable annual herb that reaches a maximum height of approximately 30 centimeters. Its leaves measure 1 to 5 centimeters long, and may be either lobed or unlobed. The inflorescence grows up to 12 centimeters long and a few centimeters wide. It is densely packed with bracts that have white to light purple ridged tips. Lobed flowers emerge between the bracts, and these flowers may be yellow, light purple, or rose in color. The plant produces capsule-shaped fruit that is roughly one centimeter long.
