About Cassionympha cassius (Godart, 1823)
Cassionympha cassius, commonly known as the rainforest brown, is a butterfly species that belongs to the family Nymphalidae. This butterfly is found in South Africa, where it is common in cool, moist forests, coastal bush, riverine bush, and kloofs (gorges). Its range extends from the Western Cape along the western coast, through the Eastern Cape to KwaZulu-Natal, and along the eastern slopes of the escarpment through Eswatini and Mpumalanga to the Soutpansberg in Limpopo. Males have a wingspan of 34–38 mm, while females have a wingspan of 36–42 mm. Adult Cassionympha cassius are active from September to May each year. The larvae of this species feed on species in the grass family Poaceae, as well as Pentaschistis capensis and Juncus capensis.
