About Casimiroa edulis La Llave & Lex.
Mature Casimiroa edulis trees are evergreen and reach heights between 5 and 16 meters (16 to 52 feet). Their leaves are alternate and palmately compound, bearing 3 to 5 leaflets. Each leaflet is 6–13 cm long and 2.5–5 cm wide with an entire margin, and the leaf petiole is 10–15 cm long. The tree produces an ovoid drupe fruit, 5–10 cm in diameter. The fruit has thin, inedible skin that changes from green to yellow when ripe, surrounding edible pulp that can have a flavor ranging from bland to similar to banana, peach, pear, or vanilla flan. In varieties with green skin, the pulp is creamy-white; in varieties with yellow skin, it is beige-yellow, and it has a smooth texture like that of a ripe avocado. Each fruit contains 1 to 5 large inedible seeds, which are reported to have narcotic properties.
