About Caryomyia echinata Gagné, 2008

Caryomyia echinata, commonly known as the hickory spiny gall midge, is a species of gall midge belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. This species is found in Eastern North America. The larvae of Caryomyia echinata induce the formation of galls on the leaves of hickory trees. Recorded host hickory species include Carya laciniosa, Carya ovata, Carya pallida, Carya texana, and Carya tomentosa. After development, pupae emerge from the side of the gall near its base in late summer. This gall is the only woody Caryomyia gall that is covered in very long, stiff hairs, and it forms between leaf veins rather than on the veins themselves.
