About Carex woodii Dewey

Carex woodii Dewey is a rhizomatous sedge that grows as loose clumps and forms large vegetative colonies. Its leaf sheaths have a reddish-purple tinge. It flowers and fruits earlier in the year than most other Carex species found within its range; in Michigan, this species produces fruit by mid-May or earlier. Carex woodii is native to the Midwestern and Eastern United States, as well as Ontario. It grows in both moist and dry woodlands. It is classified as a rare plant of conservation concern in the Chicago region and Connecticut.
