About Carex kobomugi Ohwi
Carex kobomugi Ohwi is a low-growing sedge that spreads along the ground via thick rhizomes. It produces flowering stems that reach up to 30 centimetres (12 inches) tall, with a diameter of 3โ4 millimetres (0.12โ0.16 inches). This species is generally dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate individual plants. Its leaves are 3โ8 mm (0.12โ0.31 in) wide, longer than the flowering stems, and its lowest bracts resemble the leaves. Male inflorescences measure 40โ50 mm (1.6โ2.0 in) long and around 12 mm (0.47 in) wide, while female inflorescences are slightly larger, at 40โ60 mm (1.6โ2.4 in) long and around 30 mm (1.2 in) wide. Carex kobomugi grows on coastal sand dunes and other sandy coastal sites. Its natural range stretches along the coast of mainland Asia from Heilongjiang province in China, around the Korean Peninsula and the Yellow Sea, southward to Zhejiang province in China. It is also found around Japan's four main islands and in Taiwan, which marks the southernmost limit of this sedge's distribution.
