About Carex garberi Fernald
This sedge, Carex garberi Fernald, grows in loose clumps of stems that reach up to 40 to 70 centimeters tall. Its leaves can be shorter than the stems or much taller, and are only a few millimeters wide. Inflorescences grow at the tips of stems and along their sides; lateral inflorescences are pistillate, while terminal inflorescences usually contain both male and female flowers. The scales covering the flowers are brown, with a pale stripe running through the midline. This species grows in many types of forests and meadows, most often in wet locations like swamps or pools, and it is common around the Great Lakes. It is native to northern North America, where it occurs across all of Canada and Alaska, and at higher elevations as far south as the San Francisco Bay Area of California.
