About Carex echinata Murray

Carex echinata Murray is a tussock-forming, grass-like plant that belongs to the family Cyperaceae. It produces a solid, ridged stem that can grow taller than 1 meter (3 feet 3 inches), with a small number of thin, thready leaves growing near the base of the stem. Its inflorescences are made up of star-shaped spikelets that measure 3 to 15 millimeters (0.12 to 0.59 inches) across. This species can be infected by the fungus Anthracoidea karii. This sedge is native to North America, Central America, and parts of Eurasia. By 2016, it had spread to as far east as Taiwan. It grows in wet forests, marshes, and moderate-elevation mountain meadows, and is commonly found growing in association with peat bogs.
