About Carex douglasii Boott
Carex douglasii Boott is a species of sedge that grows thin rhizomes, which produce triangular stems reaching up to approximately 40 centimeters in height. Its leaves are thick but narrow, and sometimes rolled in shape. This plant is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate individual plants. The female (pistillate) inflorescence is distinct: female flowers have long, protruding, persistent stigmas that tangle together into a wide mass. This species is native to a large portion of western North America, covering western Canadian provinces, the western United States, and Baja California. It can grow in dry, wet, and seasonally moist habitats, ranging from prairies and grasslands to marshes. It tolerates both sandy and alkaline growing substrates.
