About Carex buchananii Berggr.
Carex buchananii Berggr. is a reddish-brown, densely tufted sedge. It produces flowers between October and December, and fruits between November and June. Its nuts are dispersed through granivory and wind. This species is uncommon in the North Island of its range, where it only occurs south of the Manawatu. In the South Island, it has a wider distribution, though it has never been recorded in Westland or Fiordland. It grows from coastal areas up to mountain elevations of 1000 m, most commonly on beaches and along the margins of lakes and streams.
