About Carex atherodes Spreng.

Carex atherodes Spreng. is a species of sedge, commonly called wheat sedge. It is native to Eurasia and a large portion of North America, covering most of Canada and the United States. It is an especially common wetland plant across the American Midwest and western areas of the continent. It grows in moist and wet habitats, including marshes, moist prairie, and can also grow in shallow water. This species of sedge produces triangular, hollow stems that grow 30 to 120 centimeters tall. Its leaves are hairy, particularly on their lower sections, and the leaf sheath has a reddish purple tint. The inflorescence can reach up to 60 centimeters in length, and is composed of multiple spikes. Spikes positioned near the tip of the inflorescence are usually staminate, while spikes lower in the inflorescence are usually pistillate. Each fruit has two or more long, thin teeth at its tip.
