About Canthigaster janthinoptera (Bleeker, 1855)
Canthigaster janthinoptera, commonly called the honeycomb toby, is a pufferfish species belonging to the family Tetraodontidae. This species is native to the Indo-Pacific region. Its range extends along the east coast of Africa south to the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, east to Oeno Island, the Line Islands, and the Marquesas Islands, north to Japan, and south to Lord Howe Island. Near the Hawaiian Islands, this species is replaced by its relative Canthigaster jactator, and in the Eastern Pacific it is replaced by Canthigaster punctatissima. It lives in reef environments, most often near sponges, at depths between 1 and 30 meters (3 to 98 feet). It reaches a total length of 9 centimeters (3.5 inches). Its diet includes sponges, polychaetes, and algae, plus small amounts of tunicates, crustaceans, echinoderms, and corals. It is an oviparous species, and is most commonly found alone or in pairs.
