About Canthigaster coronata (Vaillant & Sauvage, 1875)

Scientific name: Canthigaster coronata (Vaillant & Sauvage, 1875). The crowned toby reaches a maximum length of 14 cm. Three dark brown saddle-shaped markings run along its back. These markings may have reminded Hawaiians of lava flows, which is how the species got its Hawaiian name pu'u olai, meaning "cinder cone". Much of the fish's whitish body is covered in yellow dots, and blue and yellow lines radiate out from the fish's eyes.
