About Cantharellus friesii Quél.

Cantharellus friesii Quél., commonly called the orange chanterelle or velvet chanterelle, is a fungus species native to Asia and Europe. Its cap ranges in color from deep yellow to reddish orange, and measures 2–4 cm wide. This species grows in beech, fir, and spruce forests. It is classified as a good edible mushroom. However, due to its rarity, it should be carefully managed: if it is found on residential or commercial property, fungicides should be used only in limited amounts. Harvesting the fungus's fruit bodies supports further propagation of the species, because its spores become dispersed as collectors travel. The specific epithet friesii was named to honor mycologist Elias Magnus Fries.
