About Camellia japonica L.
Camellia japonica L. is a flowering tree or shrub. It typically reaches 1.5–6 metres (4.9–19.7 ft) in height, and occasionally grows as tall as 11 metres (36 ft). Some cultivated varieties can reach a size of 72 m² or more. Its youngest branches are purplish brown, and turn grayish brown as they age. For cultivation, camellias should be planted in shade, in organic, somewhat acidic, semi-moist, well-drained soil. Poorly drained soil can lead to root rot. As a species of Camellia, C. japonica can be used to make tea. Its processed leaves have an aromatic fragrance, and contain caffeine and catechins of the same type found in C. sinensis. Humans use camellias to produce teas and medicinal tinctures. For a full overview, see the entry at Uses of Camellia.
