About Cambarus acuminatus Faxon, 1884
Cambarus acuminatus Faxon, 1884 is a crayfish species that ranges in color from red-brown to orange-brown, with individual carapace lengths measuring 13.3 to 21.0 mm. The broader species complex that includes this crayfish has a known range extending from Columbia, South Carolina, north to southeastern Pennsylvania, and covers most of the Piedmont Plateau and Gulf Coastal Plain. However, Cambarus acuminatus in the strict biological sense is only found in the Saluda River Basin of northwestern South Carolina. This species favors third order or higher streams that have a steep gradient, and that contain pool, riffle, and run habitats. Adult individuals prefer cobble substrates that include boulders and slabs, which they use for hiding cover. Juvenile crayfish of this species are found in more sheltered areas, including leaf packs, undercut banks, and woody debris.
