About Calystegia macrostegia (Greene) Brummitt
Calystegia macrostegia is a woody perennial herb or small shrub. It can grow as either a low herbaceous vine or a stout, woody climbing plant that can reach nearly 9 metres (30 ft) in length. Its triangular leaves may be over 10 centimeters wide. This vine produces blooms that range in color from white, to very pale pink, to lavender; bloom color often varies based on drought conditions or temperature. The corollas measure 2–6 centimetres (0.79–2.36 in) or more across.
This plant is native to California coastal sage and chaparral habitats, growing along the coasts of Southern California and extending into Baja California, Mexico. It occurs on all of the Channel Islands, which is the source of its common names. It is also commonly found growing in the Peninsular Ranges, Transverse Ranges, and Outer Southern California Coast Ranges.
Calystegia macrostegia is cultivated as an ornamental plant. It is used as a vine and groundcover in native plant gardens, drought-tolerant gardens, and wildlife gardens. It acts as a pollinator plant that supports native bee species.
