About Calochortus simulans (Hoover) Munz
Calochortus simulans is a perennial herb that produces a branching stem up to 60 centimeters (24 inches) tall. Its single basal leaf is 10 to 20 centimeters (4 to 8 inches) long, and withers by the time the plant flowers. The inflorescence is a loose cluster holding 1 to 3 erect, bell-shaped flowers. Each flower has three curving sepals and three longer petals, each of which can grow up to 5 centimeters (2 inches) long. The petals range in color from white to yellow, and have a deep red spot at the base. After flowering, the plant produces an angled seed capsule that measures 5 or 6 centimeters (2 to 2 and 1/3 inches) long. This species is native to San Luis Obispo County, California, and its range extends south into the northern portion of Santa Barbara County.
