About Calmella cavolini (Vérany, 1846)
Calmella cavolini is a small species of aeolid sea slug that reaches a maximum length of 12 millimeters. It has smooth, elongated rhinophores, oral tentacles, and angular anterior foot corners. Its cerata each grow from a single common stalk and are arranged in clusters. On each side of the body, the front three ceratal clusters are oppositely arranged, while the rear three ceratal clusters are arranged alternately. The digestive gland duct is bright red, but the apical cnidosac is white. The jaw plates are purplish red, and show through each side of the sea slug's head as a visible reddish spot. This species is reported to feed on the hydroid Eudendrium. Calmella cavolini occurs in the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean near Europe, and is found mainly in Spain and Portugal.
