About Callospermophilus saturatus (Rhoads, 1895)
This species, scientifically named Callospermophilus saturatus (Rhoads, 1895), is larger in body size than the related species C. madrensis and C. lateralis. It has a faint russet-colored outline along its head, shoulders, and the full length of its body, and reaches a total body length of at least 286 mm. C. saturatus is distributed in the northwestern United States, in the area north of the Columbia River, south of the Tulameen River in British Columbia, and west of the Similkameen River. No fossils of this species have been found to date. The Columbia River geographically separates C. saturatus from its sister species S. lateralis, and their species differentiation is likely the result of allopatric speciation.
