Callopatiria granifera, commonly called the red starfish, is a medium-sized species that ranges in color from orange to red. It can grow up to 15 cm (5.9 inches) in diameter. Its dorsal surface has a texture similar to a tiled roof, and its arms taper toward rounded ends. This species is distributed along the South African coast from Namibia to Durban, where it occurs in subtidal areas. It feeds on detritus in its ecosystem.
