About Callistoctopus luteus (Sasaki, 1929)

Callistoctopus luteus, commonly called the starry night octopus, is an octopus species that belongs to the family Octopodidae. This species is distributed in the Western Pacific, with recorded occurrences near the Gulf of Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Timor, and Hawaii. Its type locality is the Pescadore Islands of Taiwan. It inhabits sandy seafloors, seaweed areas, and rubble zones to forage for prey, and can be found at depths reaching up to 82 meters. Individuals of this species are reddish brown with multiple white spots. The species reaches a maximum total length of 70 cm, and a maximum mantle length of 12.5 cm.
