Callirhoe involucrata (Nutt. ex Torr. & A.Gray) A.Gray is a species of flowering plant in the mallow family, with common names purple poppy-mallow, winecup and buffalo rose. It is native to the Great Plains of the United States and adjacent areas in northern Mexico. In winter, its leaves and stems die back, and at most only a small rosette of green leaves remains visible directly above the root crown. According to writer Claude A. Barr, purple poppy-mallow is one of the most consistent plants for producing vivid blankets of color. Each plant can cover a large area of ground, bearing masses of distinctively cut leaves and numerous wine-crimson cup-shaped flowers. When grown in suitably sandy or well-draining soils, each plant develops a large parsnip-like root. It is a good water-thrifty ground cover.
