About California macrophylla (Hook. & Arn.) Aldasoro, C.Navarro, P.Vargas, L.Sáez & Aedo
California macrophylla (Hook. & Arn.) Aldasoro, C.Navarro, P.Vargas, L.Sáez & Aedo is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It grows in open habitats including grassland and scrub. This species is an annual herb that reaches only a few centimeters, or 1 inch, tall. It forms a patch of slightly lobed leaves that range from somewhat kidney-shaped to rounded, borne on long, slender petioles. The upper leaf surface is green, while the lower leaf surface is purple; mature leaves often develop distinct red veins. Its inflorescence is a fragile umbel of flowers. Each flower's petals are around one centimeter, or 0.4 inches, long, white in color, and often tinted pinkish or purplish. Petals detach easily, so flowers rarely remain in perfect condition for more than one day. The fruit has a fuzzy base and a long, narrow style that can reach 5 cm, or 2 inches, in length.
