This species is officially classified as Calendulauda albescens, first described by Lafresnaye in 1839. It is commonly known as the Karoo lark, or alternatively the red-backed lark, and it belongs to the lark family Alaudidae. The Karoo lark should not be mistaken for the similarly named Karoo long-billed lark. This species is endemic to South Africa, and its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical dry shrubland.
