Caldcluvia paniculata (Cav.) D.Don can reach up to 20 m (65 ft) in height and up to 60 cm (24 in) in trunk diameter. Its bark is grayish brown. Its leaves are arranged oppositely, have toothed edges, and are oblong and lanceolate in shape. Leaves measure 7-15 cm long and 2โ4 cm wide, with acute apexes and bases. The upper leaf surface is glossy green, while the lower surface is whitish and somewhat hairy. The petioles are fluted and hairy, and measure about 0.7-1 cm long. The white hermaphrodite flowers grow in clusters on axillary peduncles; both the peduncles and pedicels are hairy. Flowers have 4-5 hairy, more or less imbricate sepals, and 4โ5 petals that alternate with the sepals. Each flower has 8-10 stamens and 2 styles. The fruit is an acuminate, hairy capsule crowned by persistent styles, and contains dark brown seeds around 1 mm long inside. This tree requires a wet climate, tolerates up to 40% shade, and may need partial shade in some growing locations. It is classified for USDA Hardiness Zone 9. The germination success rate of its seeds is less than 30%. Its leaves are used as an herbal tea to treat colds and stomach disorders. It has been planted in Northern Ireland.
