About Caladenia capillata D.L.Jones
Caladenia capillata D.L.Jones is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous herb that often grows in clumps. It has an underground tuber and a single, very hairy, narrow linear leaf, measuring 10โ20 cm (4โ8 in) long and 3โ6 mm (0.1โ0.2 in) wide. Up to three, or sometimes four, flowers grow on a slender, very hairy spike that stands 5โ15 cm (2โ6 in) high. The dorsal sepal, lateral sepals, and petals are greyish cream to creamy white, sometimes marked with reddish streaks. They are 3โ7 cm (1โ3 in) long, about 2 mm (0.08 in) wide at the base, and taper to a long, thread-like tip. All of these structures are covered in glandular hairs and have drooping tips. The labellum is 4.5โ6 mm (0.18โ0.24 in) long, about 4 mm (0.2 in) wide, and egg-shaped when flattened. It has many short, broad teeth along its edge, and two rows of flattened calli in its center. This species is similar to Caladenia filamentosa, but it is usually shorter, and its flowers are less red than those of C. filamentosa. Flowering takes place from August to November. This caladenia grows in north-western Victoria, where it occurs in mallee scrub, and in South Australia, where it grows in heath, mallee, or light scrub in rocky locations.
