About Bulweria bulwerii (Jardine & Selby, 1828)
Bulweria bulwerii, commonly known as Bulwer's petrel, is a very long-winged petrel. It measures 25–29 cm (9.8–11.4 in) in length, with a wingspan of 78–90 cm (31–35 in). It has mostly brown plumage, a long pointed tail, and a buoyant twisting flight that it uses to pick planktonic food from the ocean surface. This species has a broad distribution across tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. It is a year-round resident in Cabo Verde, China, French Guiana, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mauritania, Morocco, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, Senegal, and Taiwan. It breeds in the Macaronesian Islands and continental Portugal in the Atlantic; in the Pacific, its breeding range extends from eastern China and the Bonin Islands east to the Hawaiian Islands, the Marquesas Islands, the United States Minor Outlying Islands, and Kiribati. It is a marine, highly pelagic species that is usually found far from land except during the breeding season. It occurs as a rare vagrant in Europe, with recorded sightings in Ireland, the Netherlands, France, and Italy. It has also been recorded as a vagrant in North America, with rare sightings far off the coasts of California and North Carolina, and in Australia.
