About Bulbine abyssinica A.Rich.
Bulbine abyssinica A.Rich. is a small geophyte with an underground stem and a tuft of slender leaves that form a rosette above ground. Its leaves are slender, succulent and cylindrical, growing up to 200 mm long and 5 mm broad. The 50 cm tall inflorescence emerges in early summer or after rain, and carries yellow flowers at its apex. Like all species in the Bulbine genus, this plant has distinctively tufted, or "bearded", stamens. This species is widespread across southern, central, and eastern Africa, growing in rocky soils. Its distribution extends from Yemen and Sudan in the north, to the Republic of the Congo and Angola in the west, and to the Cape Provinces of South Africa in the south. In the southern portion of its range, it grows as far south as Worcester, South Africa.
