About Bufotes viridis (Laurenti, 1768)

The spots on the back of Bufotes viridis (Laurenti, 1768), commonly known as the European green toad, range in colour from green to dark brown, and red spots may sometimes also appear. The toad’s underside is white or very lightly coloured. European green toads change their colour in response to changes in heat and light. Females are larger than males, and can lay between 9,000 and 15,000 eggs in one clutch. The species reaches a maximum head and body length of 10 centimetres (3.9 in), though growth to this maximum size is rare.
