About Bufotes cypriensis Litvinchuk, Mazepa, Jablonski & Dufresnes, 2019
The Cyprus green toad, scientifically named Bufotes cypriensis Litvinchuk, Mazepa, Jablonski & Dufresnes, 2019, is a species of true toad that is found only on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. It is the only toad species native to Cyprus, and is fairly commonly seen near wetlands and other bodies of water. Prior to 2019, this species was classified as part of the European green toad. This toad is endemic to Cyprus, and is more widely distributed across the northern and northeastern parts of the island. It inhabits meadows, grasslands, forests, shrublands, steppe habitats, and a variety of wetland areas, occupying any sun-exposed body of water. It occurs at elevations ranging from sea level up to 700 metres (2,300 ft), and its entire range falls within the Cyprus Mediterranean forests ecoregion.
