About Buchozia japonica (Thunb.) Callm.

Buchozia japonica (Thunb.) Callm., also known as Serissa japonica, is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub that reaches 45 to 60 cm in height. It has oval, deep green, relatively thick leaves that release an unpleasant smell when bruised; this odor is the origin of one of its synonyms, foetida. Its upright stems branch in all directions, forming a wide, bushy dome shape. This shrub is cultivated for its neat growth habit, full branch coverage, and long flowering period. It is also valued for its rough, grey trunk, which typically lightens in color as it ages. It flowers nearly year-round, with the heaviest blooming from early spring to late autumn. Its flowers are funnel-shaped, 1 cm wide, and have 4 to 6 lobes. They start as pink buds before opening into an abundant display of white flowers. Fertilization is especially important for this plant during its long flowering period.
