About Brunneria borealis Scudder, 1896
Brunneria borealis Scudder, 1896 is an elongated green praying mantis that has the characteristic raptorial forelimbs of mantises. Adult individuals of this species have reduced-sized wings, and are likely unable to fly. Members of the species can grow to a length of approximately 77 mm, which equals 3 inches. This mantis species is native to the southern United States, ranging from the Atlantic Ocean westward to Texas. In Texas, it is found in Bell County, Brazos County, Comanche County, Erath County, Montgomery County, Tarrant County, and Parker County, and these populations are thought to be separate local groups. It has been officially recorded in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. In Austin, Texas, this species was observed living on the flowerheads of slender aster, Symphyotrichum subulatum. In Cedar Creek, Texas, it was found in meadows of little bluestem grass, Schizachyrium scoparium, during the night, and could not be easily detected during the day.
