About Brugmansia sanguinea (Ruiz & Pav.) D.Don
Brugmansia sanguinea is a small tree that can grow up to 10 m (33 ft) tall. It produces pendent, tubular or trumpet-shaped flowers that come in shades of brilliant red, yellow, orange, and green. This species is endemic to the Andes mountains, ranging from Colombia to northern Chile, where it grows at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 m (6,600 and 9,800 ft). All parts of Brugmansia sanguinea are poisonous. Different parts of the plant contain tropane alkaloids in different proportions. Flower alkaloid content is mostly atropine, with only trace amounts of scopolamine (also called hyoscine). By mass, the seeds of B. sanguinea contain approximately 0.17% total alkaloids, 78% of which is scopolamine.
