About Bromelia pinguin L.

Bromelia pinguin L. is a plant species classified under the genus Bromelia. It is native to Central America, Mexico, the West Indies, and northern South America, and has been reported to be naturalized in Florida. This species is very common in Jamaica, where it is planted as a fence around pasture lands due to its prickly leaves, and it has historically been used as an herbal abortifacient. When its pulp is stripped away, the remaining material is soaked in water and beaten with a wooden mallet, the plant produces a fiber that can be used to make thread. In Nicaragua and El Salvador, this plant is used to prepare gruel.
