Breviturma pica, first formally described by Müller & Troschel in 1842, has looping white and gold lines across its body. This species has five arms that reach 3 inches (76 mm) in length; these arms bear yellow plates and numerous spines. The central body of Breviturma pica is approximately 1 inch (25 mm) in diameter, and the species has an average total size of 8 inches (200 mm). Breviturma pica is distributed across the Indo-Pacific region, with confirmed occurrences in Hawaii, Micronesia, Taiwan, Northern Australia, South Africa, and Southern Israel. This species most often inhabits spaces between the branches of cauliflower coral, and may sometimes be found under stones. It occurs at depths ranging from 7 to 200 meters (20 to 660 feet).
