Brassavola appendiculata A.Rich. & Galeotti is also known by the scientific name Brassavola cucullata, and its common name is daddy long-legs orchid. This orchid species is native to Mexico, where it ranges from Sinaloa and San Luis Potosí south to Chiapas and the Yucatán Peninsula, as well as Belize, Central America, the West Indies, and northern South America (including Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana). Brassavola cucullata is the type species for the genus Brassavola, and it is the only member of B. sect. Brassavola. The diploid chromosome number of B. cucullata has been determined to be 2n = 40.
