About Brahmaea certhia (Fabricius, 1793)

Brahmaea certhia, commonly known as the Sino-Korean owl moth, is a moth species belonging to the Brahmin moth family Brahmaeidae. This species is distributed across the Korean Peninsula and China. Its wingspan ranges from 100 mm (3.9 inches) to 120 mm (4.7 inches). In a 2022 thermographic study documented by Kim, infrared camera measurements found that surface temperatures of Brahmaea certhia differ significantly from those of the hawk moth Theretra oldenlandiae. This result suggests that Brahmaea certhia has species-specific warm-up or thermoregulatory patterns. The larvae of Brahmaea certhia feed on privet, Fraxinus mandshurica, and Syringa amurensis.
