About Brachyplatys subaeneus (Westwood, 1837)

Brachyplatys subaeneus, commonly called the black bean bug, is a species of shield bug in the family Plataspidae. It is native to much of Asia and is an invasive species in other regions outside of Asia. It is classified as a pest, and attacks legume crops particularly, while also infesting a wide variety of other plant species. This species is distributed across most of Asia, ranging from India eastward to Japan and Southeast Asia. In the Western Hemisphere, black bean bugs were first documented in 2012 in Panama, though they were initially misidentified when first found. After this first detection, additional confirmed records of the species come from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Florida (United States), where it was found in 2020.
