About Brachypalpus valgus (Panzer, 1797)

Brachypalpus valgus is a species of medium-sized fly, with a wing length ranging from 8.5 to 10.75 mm. Members of the Brachypalpus genus are blackish flies with clouded wings. For Brachypalpus valgus specifically, the thorax and scutellum are aeneous black and lack striping. Its abdominal tergites are shining black, with red coloring along the lateral sides of the abdomen base. Body hairs across the surface are sand brown. The hind trochanters have a posterior process, and the hind tibiae are slightly curved. Rotheray (1993) provided an illustration of this species' larva. This is a Palearctic species with a restricted distribution in Europe. Its range extends from southern Fennoscandia south to the Pyrenees, and from Ireland east through central Europe and northern Italy to Yugoslavia and the European portion of Russia.
