This small leatherjacket fish, Brachaluteres jacksonianus, has a round, nearly circular body, and reaches a maximum length of 9 centimetres (3.5 inches). Individuals of this species are able to inflate their abdomen. Their colouration is highly variable, ranging from pale yellow-brown to dark green, and marked with numerous dark and light stripes, spots, or ocelli. A single individual's colouration can change during the courtship process.
