This species, Bothrocophias microphthalmus, is commonly known as the small-eyed toad-headed pit viper. Its geographic distribution includes Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Its designated type locality is "between Balsa Puerto and Moyobamba, Peru".
