This species is a perennial parasitic plant with the scientific name Boschniakia rossica (Cham. & Schlecht) B.Fedtsch. Individual plants grow 6 to 12 inches tall, producing two or three stems each that form tall, slender stalks. Its roots grow horizontally outward from a central bulbous mass. The whole plant varies in color from very dark maroon to reddish brown. It blooms every summer and can produce up to 300,000 seeds per plant. Overall, B. rossica strongly resembles a pine cone growing up from the ground.
