About Borbo lugens (Hopffer, 1855)

Borbo lugens (Hopffer, 1855), commonly called the lesser horned swift or lesser horned skipper, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Hesperiidae. This species is distributed across eastern Africa and South Africa. Its typical habitat includes grassy clearings within dense woodland and forests. The wingspan of adult males measures 30–35 mm, while adult females have a slightly larger wingspan of 36–38 mm. Adults can be seen in flight year-round, though they are much more common between October and May in the southern African portion of their range. The larvae of Borbo lugens feed on species from multiple grass genera: Ehrharta erecta, Setaria sulcata, Setaria megaphylla, Panicum (including Panicum deustrum), Stipa, and Pennisetum.
