About Bombus mixtus Cresson, 1879
Bombus mixtus, formally described by Cresson in 1879, is a species of bumblebee. It is native to western North America, occurring in western Canada and the western United States, with an additional disjunct population located in the Great Lakes region. This species has several common names: fuzzy-horned bumblebee, tricoloured bumblebee, orange-belted bumblebee, and mixed bumblebee. B. mixtus can be found in a range of habitat types. In northern areas, it inhabits mountain landscapes, taiga, and tundra. It also occurs in open grassy areas, chaparral, shrublands, and meadows. It feeds on the flowers of ceanothus, fireweed, coyote mints, penstemons, phacelias, rhododendrons, and groundsels. It builds its nests either underground or on the ground surface.
