About Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich.

Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich., commonly known as ramie, Chinese grass, or Chinese silk plant, is a monoecious shrub or subshrub in the family Urticaceae. It is native to warm temperate and tropical regions of the eastern Himalaya, as well as east and southeastern Asia, and is commonly found in China. The plant grows to 2 meters tall, with alternately arranged leaves. The leaves are 7–15 cm long, 6–12 cm broad, oval-acuminate in shape, and have serrated margins. Boehmeria nivea has been cultivated for thousands of years in China and other parts of southeast Asia as the source of the fibre crop ramie. It has been introduced to tropical and subtropical areas on other continents, including the southeastern United States.
