About Bodianus anthioides (Bennett, 1832)

The lyretail hogfish, scientifically named Bodianus anthioides, is also commonly called the lyretail pigfish. It is a species of wrasse belonging to the genus Bodianus. This fish is found in the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Red Sea to the Tuamotu Archipelago. Adult lyretail hogfish live along the seaward edges of reefs, and in Micronesia they are most common at depths below 25 metres, or 82 feet. They are typically solitary, only forming pairs when spawning. Juveniles of this species mimic cleaner fish. The diet of Bodianus anthioides consists of echinoderms, mollusks, crustaceans, and small fish. This species reaches a maximum total length of 25 centimetres, which equals 9.8 inches.
