About Boana almendarizae (Caminer & Ron, 2014)
Boana almendarizae, commonly called Almendariz's tree frog, is a frog species in the family Hylidae that is endemic to Ecuador. Scientists have observed this species in the Andes Mountains, at elevations ranging between 500 and 1950 meters above sea level. Adult male individuals of this frog measure 34.3 to 44.6 mm in snout-vent length, while adult female individuals measure 37.8 to 51.9 mm. The skin on the frog's dorsum ranges from light brown to reddish brown in color, and sometimes has dark bands or transverse lines. The frog has one larger medium-brown stripe running down each side of its body, and small white and brown spots scattered across its back. Some large adult female frogs have blue coloration on their flanks, while males have light blue flanks. This frog has large eyes. It is a nocturnal species. People typically find this frog on vegetation no higher than 1.5 meters above the ground, especially near the edges of water bodies including rivers, flooded areas, and small ponds. This species is sympatric with Boana calcarata.
